When I started using this rotary hoe, I was breaking ****** ground with it. And, as recommended for that type of work, I started with the tines rotating in reverse. I was totally amazed at the depth of cut on the first pass, and the ease with which it did it. I also tried with the tines rotating forward, but found they acted like wheels and just propelled the machine forward at high speed, without "digging in". Putting them back into reverse, the tines acted to pull the back of the machine down, and deeper, and slowed it down. Also, when the tines got clogged with weeds and long grass, the bar (one each side) with the tines mounted comes away from the machine easily by removing an "R" clip and dropping the drive pin out, then sliding the bar off. Made cleaning and unclogging so simple. I love this machine.
